Garrett Family History — Other Lines

by John E. Garrett

Since the initial posting of the Garretts that make up my ancestors, I have been asked about Garretts that are not in my line. In researching the "other" Garretts I have had the opportunity to document several lines of Garretts that are different then mine. However, most of them connect to my line starting with the 1st Garrett family that immigrated to America. These lines are shown below.

The Snuff Garrett Line
This documents the Garretts that were the founders of the tobacco product, Garrett Snuff. It begins with the immigrant ancestor of these Garretts and continues through the Garrett Snuff ownership, the trial that ensued upon the death of the owners and the founding of Garrettville in Ohio.

The Sheriff Pat Garrett Line
This documents the Garrett Ancestors of Sheriff Pat Garrett whose full name was Patrick Floyd Jarvis Garrett. It begins with the same Garrett immigrant as the authors' and includes Richard Garrett, Blount Garrett. Miles Arnette Garrett, John Lumpkin Garrett, Sr, John Lumpkin Garrett, Jr, William George Thomas Garrett, Sr., as well as Patrick Floyd Jarvis Garrett.

The Ousley to Aquilla Garrett Line
This documents the line of Garretts that includes the well known Ousley's and then to Aquilla Garrett that lived in Adair County, Oklahoma. It includes John Ware Garrett, Edward T. Garrett, Ann West Ousley, Moses Hosea Garrett, Elijah Garrett, James William Garrett and Aquilla Garrett. When I was a child living in Adair County, Oklahoma I knew there were another family of Garretts in the county that my father believed to be distant cousins.

The John Wilkes Booth / Garrett Line
This line starts with a William Garrett who was born and died in Essex County, Virginia. At this time, William's ancestors are unknown. It includes the descendants of William Garrett and his second wife, Clara Faver being Richard Henry Garrett, Silias Strawn Garrett, Rev. Richard Baynham Garrett, and Richard H. Garrett. There is a chart showing the descendants of William Garrett and his first wife, Elizabeth Taylor.

The Abolitionist Garrett Line
This line includes Thomas Garrett who was one of the most prominent figures in the history of the Underground Railroad. He has been called Delaware's greatest humanitarian and is credited with helping more than 2,700 slaves escape to freedom in a forty year career as a Station Master. This line was also heavily involved in politics in Tennessee and Alabama including a governorship.

The Doyle Garrett Line
This line begins with the same immigrant ancestor as mine and ends in Georgia with Doyle Garrett. It includes, Ambros Garrett, George Washington Garrett, John S. Garrett, Daniel A. Garrett, Miles Arnette Garrett, Sr., Blount Garrett, Thomas Garrett and John Garrett II.

The Maryland Garrett Line
In the last half of the 15th Century, the Garrett ancestors divided. One of Sir Thomas I Gerrard's sons (Lawrence) went to London and started spelling his name, Garrard (or Garrett)and became the ancestor of almost all, if not all, of the line of Garretts in America. The other son, Peter, stayed in Bryn where for six generations, Peter's primary descendants were named Thomas. The sixth Thomas immigrated to America and settled in Maryland. He was a doctor. He was a prominent man who at one time owned the land that is now Washington, D.C.
